The Savannah Friends of Firefighters is a non profit organization that is based in Savannah, Georgia and was established in 2004. The Savannah Friends of Firefighters host firefighters from all around the country that march in the annual Savannah St. Patrick's Day parade.
Long Island native Jimmy Grismer is in his eight year of heading up the Friends of Firefighters organization. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1963. His career path took him to the World Trade Center where he rose to the position of general manager of operations, security and safety, retiring in 1997.
Since moving to Savannah, Honorary Chief Grismer has joined several local organizations, including The American Legion , The Southside Fire Department, The Georgia Historical Society, The Civil War Roundtable, and most recently, restoring a World War II Army firetruck at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. But much of his focus remains on New York City where both his sons, Jimmy and Rich, are firefighters.
Every year, Jim Grismer has set up a special welcome for a large contingent of firefighters who are expected to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in Savannah. This year's Parade will be special for "The Griz", for on March 15th he will be celebrating his 53rd year as an active Firefighter.
